The world of physical music is changing fast, and so are expectations around how it’s made and its impact on the environment. At Breed, our role is to track these developments and work with leading manufacturing partners so we can help artists, labels and creators make informed, realistic decisions about materials, manufacturing and packaging. No greenwashing. No overclaiming. Just clear information and practical options without compromising creativity or the product experience.

How to make your vinyl more sustainable

Vinyl materials and manufacturing options

Skip the heavyweight

140g records use less material than heavyweight records and weigh less to transport, while still delivering excellent sound and production quality.

Reground Vinyl

Sometimes called Eco-mix, pressings made using reclaimed production material can return material from the manufacturing process to new records, while creating unique and often unpredictable colour effects.

Bio-attributed PVC

The same sound and quality, using bio-attributed PVC with renewable raw materials allocated through an ISCC PLUS certified mass balance system, helping to reduce reliance on fossil derived raw materials.

Injection Moulded PET

Injection moulded records use PET (rather than PVC) and a different manufacturing process from traditional pressing. Industry footprinting has reported lower average cradle to gate emissions for the injection moulded PET records assessed than for the traditionally pressed PVC records included in the study.

Packaging that works harder with less impact

Paper and board first

FSC certified card and paper based packaging options across sleeves, outers and print.

Vegetable based inks

We prioritise vegetable based inks wherever possible.

Creative finishes and structural design

Die cutting, embossing, laser cutting and creative structural design can elevate your packaging without necessarily adding plastic, foil or lamination.

Swap out the foam

Card fitments and creative paper engineering can protect products while reducing the need for foam or plastic fitments.

Practical steps that add up

  • Reduce unnecessary components
  • Consolidate formats and quantities where practical
  • Consider recycled materials where appropriate
  • Reduce unnecessary plastic in packaging

We’ll walk you through these options during your project so your choices fit your budget, your brand and your priorities.

Sustainability FAQs and Info

Yes. Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) is a more sustainable option compared to Lacquers for a number of reasons. Firstly during processing at the pressing plant lacquers require two additional stages to create a negative (‘Father’) and a positive Positive (‘Mother’) which requires additional chemicals and energy consumption. Secondly the lacquer, which is made from an aluminium plate coated in nitrocellulose, cannot be recycled.

No. The bio-attributed PVC still uses fossil-derived material but crucially it also contains plant based alternatives introduced during manufacture to reduce the fossil input. A certified mass balance approach is used throughout manufacture to ensure the proportions are carefully controlled.

Breed Media commitment to Sustainability

We believe beautiful physical music products can - and should - be made responsibly. At Breed Media we love our physical music formats, and they still matter. But every music product has an environmental footprint, and the industry is working hard to lower it. Through our work at Breed Media, we push for better manufacturing standards, advocate for responsible sourcing, and share knowledge across the industry. That means:

  • Material options that can reduce reliance on fossil-derived raw materials
  • More efficient manufacturing processes
  • Making use of recycling, reground compounds and closed-loop approaches
  • A shift towards paper based packaging and creative, plastic free alternatives
  • Clearer information, so customers can choose what's right for them

Sustainability isn’t a box to tick. It’s an ongoing process, and we’re here to help you make the best choice every step of the way. At Breed, we’re always tracking developments in materials and manufacturing, working with leading manufacturing partners to give our customers clear information about the options available right now.
